I’m super excited to share with you something that I find fascinating! It’s BACTERIA!! They are a vital ally to our bodies and our pet’s bodies! More specifically, it’s the microbiome, a community of bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses. These “good bacteria” live in and on our bodies. The microbiome is essential to our health and affects every system and function in our bodies. The “good guys” literally run the show! What we eat, what we put on our skin, medications, anything we use affects the bacteria in the body. When the microbiome performs well, we perform well.

DIVERSITY IS THE KEY

We have got to take care of our healthy bacteria! This means creating an environment that is friendly to them because they have a vital role to play in the body. A friendly microbiome helps us digest food, regulates the immune system, blocks the effects of pathogenic bacteria, produces vitamins (B12, Riboflavin, Thiamine, and Vitamin K), and helps regulate healthy hormones and metabolic processes. It can even determine if we are lean or obese!  The diversity of beneficial microbes makes all the difference!

A microbiome that has low diversity is caused by overuse of antibiotics or medications, poor diet, exposure to chemical toxins and stress. Even the monthly flea and tick treatments we use on our pets disrupts the healthy gut microbes.  Effects of an unstable microbiome are shown in overall health issues including: allergies, inflammatory response, diabetes, Cushings, and auto-immune disorders.

Although there is a wealth of scientifically proven information available about the microbiome, it is not discussed in general veterinary practice. There are a lot of things you can try at home if your pet doesn’t feel his best. Anything that can be done to improve gut health, will improve overall health, no matter what the issue.

How To Support The Good Bacteria

So what can we do from home to support a thriving microbiome? I recommend the use of essential oils at the first sign of health issues. For pets with digestive issues, incorporating beneficial yeast called Saccharmyces boulardi is great for added immune support. Also, remove all grains from your pet’s diet including removing dry kibble if possible. Add supplements such as probiotics, digestive enzymes, and Omega 3’s.
